So you are so excited that you have successfully adopted in 2016 and would like to claim your child on your taxes and also get the adoption tax credit, but you do not have a SS # yet. What do you do? First, you obtain an Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number, commonly referred to as an (ATIN) through the IRS. This will allow you to claim your child from tax purposes. Once you obtain a SS# for your child you can apply for the adoption tax credit.
